Music

Students in grades K-3 meet twice weekly for music classes with Ms. Luba Lischynsky. We explore and build skills in music through singing, stories, listening and movement. As students learn to read music they have opportunities to play on a variety of percussion instruments and the recorder in third grade.

Ms. Sharon Nelson teaches grades 4-5, who meet twice a week.  Grade 6-8 meet just once weekly.  Each month, all students work on one of the music competencies by connecting it in a themed unit and instrument family.  All classes have a monthly project song or written task to connect and show what they know and can do. Learning to work together is especially important.  The monthly School Sing assemblies give students a great chance to share music with their buddies.

Content includes aspects of how music, history and life are connected, reading music, and understanding how music is created.  Themes for early 2023 include American music by decade, a March Madness "play-off" between a variety of genres, and getting out to create and celebrate music in the environments around us.  Classroom instruments for learning to read music will include recorder and xylophone for 4th & 5th grade, while 6-8 will use keyboards.  Band instruments, guitar, and piano lessons are offered separately.
